Mount Saint Helens

24 years ago today, Mount St. Helens blew. I was living close enough to feel it's effects at the time, and will never forget the power of its blast, the eerie gray from the ash and the devastation – total devastation. Several years later, my family and I went to the mountain to visit and saw a car twisted around a tree, a house so buried from the resulting mudflow we were walking eye level with the eaves, and trees blown over and lying on the ground in such perfection as to look like a soldiers' parade ground.

Several times the summer of 1980 that mountain erupted forever changing the lives of those who lived around it.

May the mountain now forever rest in peace.
