Think churches are perfect places? Think again.
This morning, during Bible study, my husband fell into a loud confrontation with another man known to be a loose cannon and a powder keg. This man has belittled Angelo, argued against him, spread rumors, and generally is dainful toward my husband. We don't know why.
A couple months ago, the man raised his voice during Bible study and greatly insulted my dear husband. Angelo, bless his soul kept his cool and responded quietly and nicely.
Today was a little different. This guy started belittling Angelo, the class and the class leader (our pastor's wife.) Angelo tried to respond quietly, but this guy stormed off, "I will not take NO for an answer," and raised his fists as if to punch my husband.
Our pastor was nearby, heard the commotion and pulled Angelo out of class. The two talked and then Angelo left to do his weekly duties as a deacon of our church. The rest of the time he spent in a quiet classroom reading his Bible, praying and seeking God's forgiveness for raising his voice and losing his temper.
The other man went about his business, chatting with friends and having a good time, with no apparent thought for his part in the melay.
I was not in the class when this happened, but was informed by a class member shortly after the incident took place. Soon another came by, and then another. In each and every case, those who were in the room expressed support and love for my dear husband.
I found him in the storage room doing his duties. He had tears in his eyes as he expressed remorse for his part in the disturbance. But he was still upset at the man, too. Later he told me he felt hurt that this man felt he had to say what he said. "It just hurts me," Angelo said sorrowfully, "That L. feels like he has to say what he says."
So many times in our day to day living, marriage becomes more like a business; each spouse reciting business to each other. I know that's the way it is in our house. But today, with all the church members coming up speaking words of support, praying for us, and seeking out Angelo to encourage him reminded me that I have married a wonderful, loving Christian man who passionately seeks to lead a Christ-like life.
